Meet the Makers: Colorful Creator

In this Meet the Makers blog series, we will feature an artist that, quite simply, makes something. Drawing inspiration from custom works handcrafted in various media, we travel beyond the pieces by diving into the minds of the creative makers themselves.

Today, we feature our interview with Kali Gibbons, the creative artist of colorful compositions. Kali captures the beauty of the simple things in life by creating colorful artwork while using different forms of medium. Her colorful works are generated right here in our hometown of Cleveland, Ohio!

GPI Design: What (3) words best describe your work?

Kali Gibbons: Whimsical – Vibrant – Intricate

GPI: What compels you to create with this particular medium?

Gibbons: I am compelled to use any medium that I feel is appropriate for my “idea”. It can be watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils, or ink. The simple things in life trigger these ideas for me. It ranges from the patterns I see on an animal; to the way sunlight shines on an object, or the splatter effect I see from a drop of rain hitting my skin. It can be the feeling I get when I see something beautiful, or the way my eyes light up when I see my favorite color.  I channel these bright colors, patterns, and feelings into my art in hopes that the viewer, in that moment, can feel this beauty as well.

GPI: What is your biggest constraint in the creative process?

Gibbons: My biggest limitation in my creative process would be time management. I like to challenge myself by taking on multiple projects at once.  It adds that unwanted stress of feeling like I’m on a time crunch, but I remind myself that I am lucky to have this unique talent!

GPI: What would your 5 year old former self say about your work now? And what do you hope your future 90 year old self will say about your current work?

Gibbons: I know my 5-year-old former self would be proud of my improvements, because with every project, I learn more about my style and art all together. I hope my 90-year-old self will look back on my current work and smile, feeling accomplished.

GPI: What other maker would you most like to collaborate with?

Gibbons: I would love to collaborate with Jackson Pollock. I love the idea of throwing paint all over a giant canvas.

GPI: What do you think the future of creation/creativity holds (for you, and the artistic world as a whole)?

Gibbons: I will never give up my passion because it makes me who I am. As for the artistic world as a whole, I will continue to teach children and adults the importance of art and share my talents with anyone who accompanies me on my journey.  I believe I’m in for a colorful ride!
