Thursday Salute to Originals: Kinetic Sculptures

Ivan Black is an artist that constructs kinetic sculpture based on the Fibonacci sequence, an integer sequence characterized by the fact that every number after the first two is the sum of the two preceding ones. Black’s work is unique in the fact that he uses motion in a continuous sequence in each of his sculptures! Geometric shapes are a signature staple of his work.

Black is a native of London, and his work ethic and dedication to each piece are traits that were inherited from his parents. Both of his parents had creative professions, especially his mother who was a kinetic artist. The concepts of precision and repetition are strung throughout his work (and process).

The inspiration for Black’s work is attributed from a few sources – iconic natural figures and mathematical formulas. Movement is the primary focal point while simplistic shapes are secondary. Black believes that his sculptures create energy. While incorporating repetition in those shapes, each sculpture tells a story of the merge between technology and art, displayed in beautiful contemporary works.

This Thursday, we’re saluting Ivan Black and his mind-bending kinetic sculptures! Each piece is a sort of problem that Black likes to solve. It is apparent that he is up to each challenge!
