Thursday Salute to Originals: 2D Tearoom
The line between what is “commercial” and what is “artful” is frequently blurred in the realm of modern creators. Over the past decade, some may say that line has been completely erased.
Step into a whimsical shop like the Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20 in Seoul, and the convergence of commercial and fine art comes full circle in the form of a cartoon café experience.
The novelty interior of this Korean coffee shop is a symbolic clash between two worlds — the real and the imaginary. From furniture to walls and doors, each room is a two-dimensional optical illusion that makes real-world visitors feel as if they have been transported to a comic book realm.
Even the mugs and dishes are “drawn up” to match the 2D theme!
With attention to detail in every corner, the illusion of becoming part of a two-dimensional universe is nearly perfect, with only some fixtures like a modern cash register or espresso machine interrupting the carefully crafted fantasy.
This Thursday, we’re saluting the designers of the Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20. Their cartoon, commercial café brings a nearly perfect illusion to life, complete with wonder and whimsy made for anyone to enjoy.
