Thursday Salute to Originals: Porcelain Embrace
Intimate gestures are encapsulated in porcelain foam in this sculpture series.
In a continuation of her sculpture series titled Foreigners, London-based Argentinian artist Claudia Fontes sculpts an abstract representation of two people embracing.
Underneath organic porcelain blobs, two human figures can be seen connecting mid-embrace within each piece. In contrast with previous iterations in the series, the focal point of the sculptures is the amorphous porcelain, not the human forms.
“[I wanted to see] the material as the main protagonist of the piece, steering away from representation,” said Fontes in an interview with This is Colossal.
The porous surfaces are pierced and molded to resemble organic matter — like a sea sponge, coral, or foamy waves. The blobs merge seamlessly with the human bodies, forming an uninterrupted, single structure.
This Thursday, we’re saluting Claudia Fontes original exploration of porcelain. You can view previous iterations of this series and additional works on the artist’s Instagram or on her site.
